ABN AMRO | Banking and Financial Services | 22267 | $10.4B | Netherlands | Murex | Murex MX.3 | Trading Platform,Portfolio and Investment Management | 2022 | n/a |
In 2022 ABN AMRO moved its Murex MX.3 trading and treasury front to back to risk system into the Azure public cloud, centralizing a mission critical Trading Platform,Portfolio and Investment Management application that underpins its global markets activity. Murex MX.3 was implemented as the bank's flagship platform for pricing, risk analytics and integrated trade processing, supporting front office, risk and post trade workflows used by hundreds of traders, sales staff, quants, risk managers, back officers and accountants across ABN AMRO.
The implementation preserved nearly 90 percent of the original MX.3 design while replatforming runtime and storage to cloud native services, and it included configuration and automation across infrastructure, application and middleware layers. The deployment moved database workloads from an Oracle Exadata footprint to Oracle Database on Azure NetApp Files, and automated provisioning paths were created so developers can spin up new MX.3 development instances on Azure quickly.
Operational integrations were kept broad, reflecting the hundreds of systems connected to MX.3 that feed trade, position and risk data into downstream accounting and control workflows. Automation was realized through Azure DevOps to orchestrate environment allocation and continuous deployments, enabling fully automated scale up and scale down and the ability to provision new environments in roughly half a day while keeping the platform in production on cloud infrastructure.
Governance and process change were driven through ABN AMRO’s multi year Apollo initiative, which combined a shift to DevOps ways of working, capability assessment programs and cloud adoption. The program included workforce reskilling via the Microsoft Enterprise Skilling Initiative and the creation of a dedicated team to establish end to end application ownership, operational controls and compliance practices appropriate for highly regulated banking operations.
ABN AMRO reports that the MX.3 move to Azure delivered improved flexibility, agility and time to market, along with enhanced enterprise grade performance and a reduction in on premises infrastructure footprint that contributes to lower carbon emissions. These outcomes were achieved while maintaining the platform’s operational excellence and regulatory security posture.
