BC Hydro | Utilities | 7700 | $5.0B | Canada | Rackspace Technology | Onica by Rackspace Technology | Professional Services | 2018 | n/a |
In 2018, BC Hydro implemented Onica by Rackspace Technology to provision an automated, secure on-demand compute environment on Amazon Web Services. The Onica by Rackspace Technology engagement, categorized as Professional Services, was scoped to enable cloud-based processing for utility computation that supports power generation output management at BC Hydro, Canada’s third largest electric utility serving approximately 1.9 million customers.
The implementation centered on automated compute provisioning and orchestration, using AWS to spin up a 216 CPU environment in 10 to 15 minutes, deploy data and program code in five minutes, run the model in 10 to 12 minutes, and destroy the environment in five to 10 minutes. Functional capabilities delivered included on-demand batch compute orchestration, automated deployment of model artifacts and data, secure data handling in-cloud, and scripting to manage lifecycle creation and teardown of transient environments for cost control.
Integrations and platform coverage were explicitly with Amazon Web Services and AWS data platforms, aligning cloud adoption, migration, and data engineering practices to support compute-intensive models. Operational scope targeted BC Hydro’s modeling and IT functions responsible for generation output optimization, enabling burst compute for models that needed to run roughly 10 times per month, while keeping runtime cost per run approximately 10 dollars.
Governance and delivery were driven by Onica by Rackspace Technology providing AWS architecture, software engineering, and implementation planning because BC Hydro lacked the in-house expertise to build the solution. Security controls and automated lifecycle workflows were embedded into the deployment patterns to secure data in the cloud and minimize ongoing on-site infrastructure costs, with explicit operational procedures for provisioning, execution, results retrieval, and environment teardown.
