Alistair Group Transportation 600 $150M Tanzania Rackspace Technology Onica by Rackspace Technology Professional Services 2019 n/a
In 2019, Alistair Group implemented Onica by Rackspace Technology. Alistair Group is an East Africa based logistics company that moves 650,000 tons of cargo per year across 14 countries and required a Professional Services solution to manage a growing subcontractor fleet of drivers, trucks and load assignments. The implementation used a cloud native, serverless application architecture on Amazon Web Services, with Onica by Rackspace Technology delivering Cloud Adoption & Migration, Application Management & Operations and Cloud Native Development capabilities. The application exposed a RESTful API via Amazon API Gateway, with AWS Lambda functions implementing business logic and Amazon DynamoDB as the primary transactional datastore. A subset of data was replicated from DynamoDB using DynamoDB streams and AWS Lambda into Amazon Elasticsearch Service to provide full text search and time series analysis, and Angular provided the web frontend while an Android application supported driver workflows. Operational integrations included Amazon Cognito for authentication and Amazon Simple Notification Service for push notifications to drivers, enabling real time assignment dispatch and status updates. The deployment targeted hundreds of subcontractor trucks and drivers across Alistair Group operations in 14 countries, supporting fleet management, load assignment, driver performance monitoring and reporting workflows. Onica by Rackspace Technology executed a sprint based, iterative development and rollout model to rapidly validate the business use case and evolve functionality. The serverless design kept ongoing costs low while allowing flexibility to scale up and scale down, and the solution automated dispatch, progress reporting and driver performance metric collection so drivers could receive assignments and report on the go.
Babbly Professional Services 20 $3M Canada Rackspace Technology Onica by Rackspace Technology Professional Services 2018 n/a
In 2018, Babbly engaged Onica by Rackspace Technology to implement a production-ready Kubernetes infrastructure to meet HIPAA compliance, platform security, scalability and reliability requirements for its Professional Services application. The engagement prioritized a secure, observable platform to support frequent application releases and a closed beta submission ahead of marketplace launch timelines. Onica by Rackspace Technology built an Amazon EKS based Kubernetes architecture with Amazon RDS for database management and multi-stage pipelines for development and production to support improved QA and release velocity. Infrastructure as code was standardized with AWS CloudFormation and Onica’s Runway tooling, which provided orchestration and native Kustomize support for Kubernetes manifests, while Bitbucket pipelines were used for CI/CD and deployment automation. Security and networking were implemented using Amazon Certificate Manager integrated with Elastic Load Balancers and Amazon Route 53, AWS WAFv2 for edge protection, the ALB Ingress controller and external DNS for dynamic service routing, and Linkerd to enforce intra-cluster encryption and service mesh observability without application code changes. Pod-level IAM and least permissive access patterns were applied, encrypted file systems and SSL were enabled, logs were centralized to Amazon CloudWatch log groups and CloudWatch Container Insights provided container-level metrics and troubleshooting. Operational governance included moving CLI cluster creation to a managed infrastructure-as-code approach to introduce compliance checkpoints, automated database backups and multi Availability Zone deployment for resilience, along with documentation and working sessions to hand over operations to Babbly’s small development team. The production-ready Kubernetes architecture was delivered in six weeks to meet the launch deadline, enabling improved uptime, automated scalability and more efficient continuous integration and continuous delivery workflows.
BBTV Holdings Media 284 $330M Canada Rackspace Technology Onica by Rackspace Technology Professional Services 2021 n/a
In 2021, BBTV Holdings implemented Onica by Rackspace Technology under the Professional Services engagement to scale cloud infrastructure that supports its multi partner YouTube content optimization and monetization products. The engagement targeted BBTV’s need to handle big data for algorithm driven viewership improvements, metrics and content optimization across more than 15,000 network partners, while addressing security, high availability and automated deployment requirements. Onica by Rackspace Technology designed and provisioned a secure virtual network using Amazon Web Services VPC, and deployed load control via Elastic Load Balancing to limit access to internal servers while enabling future scale. Application deployment was scripted to leverage AWS Elastic Beanstalk and Amazon RDS, reducing complexity for clustered environments and removing common operational tasks that slow feature rollouts. The architecture emphasized decoupling through Amazon SQS worker queues and ephemeral AWS spot instances to support massively parallel video processing workloads associated with products such as VISO Catalyst. The implementation encompassed cloud management and operations, data management, and data strategy and governance practices on AWS, including the introduction of testing and sandbox environments to support BBTV’s agile development process. Operational coverage included production systems management, policies for access and AWS resource governance, and design considerations to mitigate DDoS risk and reduce network egress costs. As delivered, the design enabled BBTV to process large scale video volumes, with Onica by Rackspace Technology and BBTV using spot instances and SQS workers to process around half a million YouTube videos in a few weeks for a fraction of the cost of a comparable monolithic instance based approach. Ongoing collaboration focuses on cost optimization, expansion of sandbox and test environments, and operational governance for AWS resources to support continued product rollouts.
