3M | Manufacturing | 61500 | $24.6B | United States | SAP | SAP EWM (Extended Warehouse Management) | Warehouse Management | 2019 | n/a | In 2019, 3M implemented SAP EWM Extended Warehouse Management as part of its POLARIS end to end SAP footprint, targeting Warehouse Management across manufacturing, distribution and customer service functions. Westernacher accompanied 3M on the program and contributed to a standardized global template and rollout strategy to align warehouse operations across the enterprise. The implementation covered core inbound and outbound warehouse capabilities in SAP EWM Extended Warehouse Management, including quality inspections on receipt, configurable putaway strategies, RF device integration for inbound and outbound flows, cycle count and replenishment automation, wave management for outbound sequencing, and picking and pack optimization. The EWM configuration emphasized batch traceability and serial number management at bin level, integrated label generation to reduce manual labelling, labour management, and advanced production staging with expected goods receipts and automatic generation of quality certifications from EWM. Deployment was executed as a full wall to wall SAP IT landscape with EWM at its center, and the program targeted integration with other SAP components in scope for POLARIS, including SAP ECC and SAP TM as part of transport process integration. The technical architecture included RF device integration for mobile transactions, label integration with downstream packing systems, and direct interfaces between EWM and transport execution to enable end to end goods movement and expected goods receipt orchestration. Governance relied on a standardized EWM template rolled out to more than 170 plants and distribution centers, providing consistent master data, process controls, and operational templates for inbound, storage and outbound workflows. The rollout was structured to support cross business warehouse excellence, with centralized template governance, local cutover planning, and operational training to bring 250 plus EWM and TM users and the broader SAP user base into aligned processes. Documented outcomes from the implementation include global stock transparency and full inventory visibility to global planners and customer service, streamlined inventory transfers between sites and plants, more efficient handling of disruptions at production plants, improved picking efficiency at carton heavy volume picking sites, reduced manual labelling and touch points at pack centers, and full outbound RF capabilities for picking, loading and shipping processes. | |
