AES Corporation | Utilities | 9600 | $12.7B | United States | SAP | SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud | Application Hosting and Computing Services | 2020 | n/a |
In 2020, AES Corporation implemented SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud to host SAP S/4HANA as part of a global ERP consolidation initiative. The deployment is categorized under Application Hosting and Computing Services and was executed as a secure private cloud managed by SAP, completed in a four month project timeline.
Implementation scope centered on consolidating a large number of distributed business ERP instances across multiple countries into a single SAP S/4HANA platform running on SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud. The solution package included SAP S/4HANA, the SAP Fiori user experience, and SAP operational services such as SAP Value Assurance and SAP MaxAttention services to accelerate deployment and stabilize operations.
The technical architecture relied on SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud for infrastructural scalability and private cloud management, enabling database and data center component upgrades to be performed with no business disruption. Configuration and automation efforts focused on transactional performance tuning for SAP S/4HANA and delivering a simplified SAP Fiori UX to reduce training needs and streamline core ERP workflows.
Governance and operational resilience were strengthened through SAP Value Assurance and SAP MaxAttention, which provided an engineered-services delivery approach for decision support, best practices, and structured rollout governance. Explicit outcomes reported by AES include reduced total cost of ownership through hardware reduction and elimination of maintenance and software licenses, enhanced ability to scale systems for concurrency and demand, pay for consumption economics, and increased transactional performance and user efficiency following migration to SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud and SAP S/4HANA.

American Airlines | Transportation | 136900 | $54.2B | United States | SAP | SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud | Application Hosting and Computing Services | 2016 | n/a |
In 2016 American Airlines provisioned SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud to host core HR payroll and Employee Central workloads as part of its broader SuccessFactors adoption, deploying SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud in the Application Hosting and Computing Services category to support HR and payroll operations. The deployment was aligned with a phased SuccessFactors rollout touching the Talent suite, Employee Central, payroll, and subsequent performance and compensation modules.
The implementation schedule shows the Talent suite went live in September 2016, Employee Central went live on March 26 2016, and payroll went live two weeks later on SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud, with Performance Management and Compensation targeted for the first quarter of 2017. SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud was used as the SAP private cloud foundation to host payroll and to provide the underlying platform for Employee Central and integrated HR services.
American Airlines integrated SuccessFactors with a service center case manager, Fieldglass, and payroll, and managed roughly 150 interfaces to HR data to create a unified employee record. Operational coverage extended across approximately 140,000 team members actively using SuccessFactors, and over 200,000 individuals when including pension and travel benefit recipients, spanning about 60 countries.
Governance and rollout practices began conservatively, with the admin team initially opting into only required functionality during go-live, then shifting to an accelerated quarterly opt-in cadence for new SuccessFactors releases. Executive sponsorship came from the CIO, CHRO, and CFO, and operational workflows routed employee interactions through the service center platform which handled about 600 cases a day, reinforcing single user experience and a single version of truth for employee data.
Documented outcomes and operational impacts include accelerated GDPR compliance through quarterly release opt-ins, emerging cultural change toward a unified employee experience, and an acknowledged increase in investment relative to initial expectations. American Airlines plans to mature measurement capability using SAP Workforce Analytics and future People Analytics capabilities, and is building an analytics team in the people department to operationalize workforce insights.

Anugerah Pharmindo Lestari | Distribution | 1000 | $436M | Indonesia | SAP | SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud | Application Hosting and Computing Services | 2021 | IBM |
In 2021, Anugerah Pharmindo Lestari deployed SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud under the Application Hosting and Computing Services category to upgrade its SAP environment and support nationwide logistics operations. The deployment was executed as an IBM Managed SAP Applications engagement that cut SAP HANA allocation lead times in half and reduced SAP HANA deployment time by two months compared to an on premises installation. APL already delivers 97 percent of customer orders on time, and the cloud move aimed to preserve uptime and improve operational flexibility across Indonesia's islands.
The implementation provisioned managed compute and storage resources through IBM Cloud and APL migrated its database tier from SAP HANA 1.0 to SAP HANA 2.0 on cloud, positioning the estate for a future move to SAP S/4HANA when parent company Zuellig Pharma decides to proceed. SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud was used to centralize the SAP database platform, while managed SAP Applications covered lifecycle tasks such as provisioning, patching, and uptime management.
Operational coverage included APL's logistics organization and the supporting SAP satellite applications, with IBM managing the SAP landscape and associated platform services. The move shifted 59 percent of expenditure from Capex to Opex, and APL reported lower ongoing management spend for SAP and satellite applications in IBM Cloud than it previously incurred managing its SAP landscape on premises.
Governance and rollout favored a managed services operating model to mitigate long hardware lead times in Indonesia, enabling faster resource allocation and improved system reliability. APL retained process ownership for logistics and order fulfillment while transferring infrastructure and platform responsibilities to IBM, with the SAP HANA 2.0 on cloud upgrade framed as a staging step toward eventual adoption of SAP S/4HANA.
